Do you seed bike? These two women just made protocol effortless for us

We talked on the seed cycle for years, so when I opened my first packet of by Beeya ready-to-use seed mixes (one for the first half of the month, another for the last fortnight), I was quite amazed. It helps to get to know the founders, two women steeped in natural health who I have implicit trust in. We asked Yasmin and Kaya to share more on the subject and their new products below…

Have you had the experience of going to the doctor complaining of debilitating cramps, acne, menstrual irregularities, only to be left with the option of birth control or acne medication?

Creeping hormonal imbalances are not normal, but almost everyone experiences them. Very often, women are given dressings without considering all of the lifestyle and nutritional factors that contribute to hormonal havoc. We need to look at the source of the problem, not just mask the symptoms.

Eighty percent of women struggle with hormonal imbalances that manifest as symptoms such as bloating, skin disorders, PMS, PCOS, PMDD, hot flashes, crippling perimenopause, menopausal symptoms, and more. Yet, how often are women told that they can combat these problems using food, especially seeds?

Hardly ever.

It wasn’t until a functional medicine doctor recommended the seed cycle to help with hormonal balance that we (the ladies of Beeya Wellness) became aware of this phenomenon. It’s kind of like magic and seems almost too good to be true.

If you’ve tried the seed cycle, you know it’s a bit tedious. Grind seeds fresh every day and rotate them through a 28-day cycle? Can you repeat that please?!

After trying the seed cycle and seeing the results first hand, we knew we had to create a product that was easy to use and didn’t complicate the seed cycle.

Seed Cycling 101

Balancing your hormones isn’t a magic bullet, but the seed cycle is an easy start in using the power of a nutrient-dense diet to bring your hormones back into balance, naturally. Some seeds contain beneficial nutrients such as magnesium, zinc and tryptophan which are essential for our hormones. The seed cycle allows you to consume these nutrient rich seeds in a synchronized manner with the rhythms of a menstrual cycle.

The seed cycle process involves consuming two tablespoons of pumpkin and flax seeds or sesame and sunflower seeds, depending on the phase of your cycle to support two specific hormones: estrogen and progesterone.

Imbalances of these two hormones in particular can lead to painful periods, irregular periods, skin problems, bloating, breast tenderness, and other symptoms of hormonal imbalances.

The seed cycle not only helps relieve PMS, but it can also help people with irregular cycles, amenorrhea, PMDD, PCOS, endometriosis or people in perimenopause, menopause and even phase post-menopausal.

Meet the four seeds to ride a bike:

The seed cycle uses the following four seeds, rotating through a 28-day cycle.

Linseed : Flaxseeds are packed with omega-3s, lignans, magnesium, and fiber. These tiny but potent seeds contain phytoestrogens that have a modulating effect on estrogen imbalance, a common cause of PMS. The fiber in these seeds also promotes a healthy gut microbiome and supports healthy blood sugar levels.

Pumpkin seeds: Pumpkin seeds contain magnesium, zinc, iron, tryptophan, and antioxidants such as carotenoids and vitamin E, all of which support hormone health and regulation. In addition to promoting restful sleep and mood regulation, these seeds also contain properties that help boost progesterone, a hormone essential for ovulation and reduce symptoms of PMS.

Sun-flower seeds: Sunflower seeds are packed with nutrients, including selenium, vitamin E, thiamin, and linoleic fatty acids, in addition to antioxidants like flavonoids and phenolic acids. These nutrients have been shown to regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and regulate hormones.

Sesame seeds: Sesame seeds contain manganese, calcium, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and lignans which reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar, help reduce PMS and improve the gut microbiome.

Does the seed cycle work?

While the seed cycle as practiced today is a relatively new phenomenon popularized over the past decade, these seeds have long been used medicinally in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for reproductive health. What we need now are more well-funded studies to show the benefits of these traditional methods, which work so well anecdotally and in our beta trials.

Typically, it takes about three months to see positive changes, but we’ve seen women experience benefits within weeks of using the seeds.

How to sow the cycle

Phase 1: During your follicular phase (days 1-14 of your cycle), take a tablespoon of ground flax and a tablespoon of pumpkin seeds to support estrogen levels early in your cycle, which may help improve ovulation and reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Phase 2: In your luteal phase (days 15-28 of your cycle), you switch to one tablespoon of sesame and one tablespoon of sunflower seeds to keep estrogen levels from rising or falling too suddenly, while supporting your progesterone levels, keeping symptoms such as cramping and breast tenderness at bay.
