Black Seed Bagels opens its ninth store in New York

Black Seed Bagels officially opens its 9th store in New York, located at 252 Schermerhorn Street in Boerum Hill (at Bond Street), connected to the Ace Hotel Brooklyn.

The shop will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. At around 700 square feet, it includes an order counter, a pick-up area with a separate entrance from Bond Street, three food counters with indoor seating for 17, and a dedicated merchandising area. There is also an entrance from the Ace Hotel lobby.

The northwest-facing storefront has tall windows that bring bright light into the space, blending easily into the aesthetic of the hotel’s wood and concrete exterior. The interior of the boutique is accented with warm-hued walnut wood, white subway tiles, plaster walls, concrete floors, ribbed glass, custom shelving and fixtures, linear pendant lights and round sconces. This is the third location designed by Rebecca Cohen-Scharfman, who also oversaw the creation of the Chelsea Market and Williamsburg stores.

Black Seed uses a hybrid of New York and Montreal baking techniques to create their unique bagels. Owners Noah Bernamoff, Matt Kliegman and James Beard Award-nominated chef Dianna Daoheung co-founded Black Seed in 2014, opening the first store in Nolita. Since then, Black Seed has expanded to Battery Park, East Village, NoMad, Rock Center, Chelsea (reopening late summer 2022), Bushwick and Williamsburg. Later this year, Black Seed will open its 10th and 11th locations, located downtown at 200 Park Ave and 630 Lexington Avenue.

In addition to its bagels, homemade pastrami, and smoked turkey, Black Seed sources its ingredients and other products from small, local growers who strive to be the best at what they do, using:

  • Vermont King Arthur High Gluten Flour
  • Roasted Stumptown Coffee in Red Hook, Brooklyn
  • Hudson Valley Cage Free Eggs
  • Ben’s Cream Cheese in Upstate New York
  • Milk from Battenkill Valley Creamery
  • New York State Honey
  • Smoked salmon specially made for Black Seed by Catsmo Smokehouse
  • Gluten-free bagels bought at Modern Bread and Bagel (Upper West Side)
  • And even recently collaborated with Raaka on a special limited edition chocolate bar inspired by Black Seed.

Recent menu updates include seasonal specialties such as ramp cream cheese; a strawberry, basil and black pepper cream cheese will be on the menu this summer. Black Seed also makes iconic “upcycled” cookies by incorporating ground bagel chips into their homemade chocolate chip cookies; $1 from the sale of each cookie is donated to a rotating list of non-profit organizations. (For the months of June and July, cookies will benefit the Ali Forney Center.)

Additionally, Black Seed launched new frozen packaged bagels with Whole Foods as its exclusive retail launch partner on June 1; the bagels are now available at Whole Foods stores in the New York area.

Black Seed encourages customers to order through its platform (order.blackseedbagels.com) and app (iPhone – Android), through which they can receive loyalty benefits and discounts, and place orders for delivery and pickup up to three days in advance.
