ProProtein, the Estonian female-led alternative dairy start-up, has launched a seed funding round to develop its precision fermentation platform. Seeking €700,000, ProProtein aims to develop a scalable biotech to produce dairy proteins from yeast.

In March and April, ProProtein will increase its seed round funding, following the company’s announcement of successful expression of casein by co-founder and CSO Tiina Tamm PhD. Caseins are essential functional milk proteins that give cheese the ability to melt and stretch as well as traditional flavors.

Casein without the cow

Calling the latest casein expression a “big step,” ProProtein hopes the next round of funding will focus on optimizing its yields and analyzing safety, with the ultimate goal of producing real dairy cheese without cows.

Led by women and with a majority female staff, the ProProtein team has already raised €90,000 from angel investors, competitions and the Berlin-based ProVeg accelerator. The company is also part of the 2021 ProVeg Incubator program cohort.

“Our long-term goal is ultimately about impact,” commented project manager Toni Bode. “Climate solutions that want to create impact need to be highly scalable and that’s where we’re headed.”
